My story.
Hello! My name is Ted Felsberg and I am a wedding photographer in South Jersey. I photograph weddings and engagements all throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I have the greatest job in the whole world. You don’t have to sit here and read this whole thing, but I thought I would write down how I got started.
All of my jobs.
Photography wasn’t a hobby of mine. I lived my whole life never thinking about being a photographer. I had other plans. But those plans kept changing. In total, I’ve had 21 jobs in my life. When I was younger, I would try a job out for a little while and then quit and go try another one. That went on for years. I just couldn’t find a job that I wanted to make a career. After high school I took online courses to become a youth pastor. I even worked for several churches while doing that. While I still have a heart for young people, I didn’t make that my career. After that, I did everything from being in car sales, construction, working in a group home, banking, window washing, restaurants, engineering, and working for Apple. Once I got married and had kids, I stopped hopping around from job to job and I worked at Apple for nine years.
How I found wedding photography in New Jersey
My photography journey began when I was working at an engineering firm as an autocad draftsman. I got laid off from that job and it was a real bummer. I worked hard and I enjoyed what I did. Every job that I had prior to that, I had left on my own. Getting laid off made me feel like I wasn’t in control of my own destiny. I needed to change that. I needed a real career, or at the very least a side hustle. A friend recommended a book to me. It was called “Dream Job: 48 Days to the Work You Love!” by Dan Miller. This book changed my life forever. I read the book and followed all of the steps. In 48 days, the book’s process led me to the conclusion that I was meant to be a photographer. Cue epic music! My favorite part of this story is that I never owned a camera before other than a children’s purple one when I was ten. Photography wasn’t a hobby or anything like that, but I trusted this book one hundred percent. Spoiler alert, the Book was right! I had a small gold coin that my dad had given me when I was young. I sold it and bought my first camera from a student on craigslist. That day I dove head first into the photography world. That was in June of 2011. I still had other jobs in the years that followed, but I kept growing my business at the same time. I spent hours and hours everyday learning. I did online education, reading, practicing, going to meetups, and workshops. In 2019, my business grew to the point where I could quit my job and solely work for myself. I’ve never been more fulfilled.

Why I chose wedding photography over everything else.
What kind of photography.
When I started learning photography, I wasn’t sure which type I wanted to do. I started practicing at home with objects, some landscape photography, etc. But I quickly knew that I wanted to photograph people. This is where I think the 48 days to the work you love book came into play. From the tests and processes that I followed in the book, it tapped into my love for friendships and families. Landscape photography is beautiful to look at, and very inspiring. But that doesn’t “do it” for me. Throughout my learning I was constantly practicing on my friends and family, so it didn’t take long to know that I wanted to do something involving people.

I met my wife Amy at a dance recital. She was a dance teacher and my mom and little sister took her classes, so when I started photography she helped me get into dance studio pictures. I did that for a couple of summers and soon realized that I didn’t want to do that. I tried all kinds of photography in that time, but I kept coming back to weddings.

Wedding photos that make you cry, laugh, and reminisce.
Honestly, the book that got me into wedding photography was spot on. I love every aspect of this. In the beginning of the book, the author first tackles the issue of working for yourself or for a company. No right or wrong answer, but choosing that is important. When I decided to work for myself doing photography, I didn’t realize how much I would love it. Not just the photography, but the business side of things too. There are so many aspects of running this business than just taking wedding photos. There’s the marketing, taxes, emails, contracts, management software, photo editing, more taxes, web design, meetings, phonically, insurance, equipment management, blogging, bridal shows. I’ve not always been good at all of that stuff, but I really liked it all. I took knowledge from every job that I had in the past and I was able use it in my photography business. My favorite aspects of wedding photography are:
Taking pictures on the wedding day. All of the pictures!
Using techniques and creativity to create photos that an iPhone cannot
Helping create a positive and stress free environment for my couples on their wedding day (more on this later)
Getting to know my couples. My clients become friends
Web design is actually fun
Marketing can be fun if you don’t fight against your personality when doing it
One of my favorite parts is getting to interact with some of the best wedding venues in New Jersey. For instance, the staff at Scotland Run in Williamstown treats me so well. They are like family to me. Then, there is the Smithville Inn in Galloway New Jersey. They have always been so professional and courteous to me. I am always respectful and friendly to all vendors that I work next to. Everyone has the same goal: to make the couples’s wedding day amazing. Some other venues that I love to shoot at are Tomasello Winery in Hammonton New Jersey. The Bradford Estate is beautiful. The Collingswood Grand Ballroom is gorgeous. One of the most unique venues that I have ever been to is Everly at Railroad.
Enough about all of that. Let’s talk about the photos!
Wedding Photography Styles
Which style of wedding photography is right for you?
There are a lot of photography styles. It’s kind of like music. There are many genres of music, but then there are a million sub genres too and a lot of those were created or made up by the artist to try to fit their unique style. I’m going to try to describe my wedding photography style with some of the normal, well known names, and then some specific words that also work.
My photography style is unique. Its a blend of moody, emotional, timeless, elegant, creative,
Editing and shooting style.
Dark and Moody.
I really don’t like that people call it dark it and moody but thats what it’s called. It kind of gives off the feel that the photos will be dark. Dark is bad, right? What they mean when they say dark and moody isn’t that your photos will be underexposed, it means that people’s faces will be brighter than the other elements in the photo. It also means on the editing side of things, the editor will not remove or reduce the “blacks” in a photo. These types of photos have more contrast in them. Not always, but generally dark and moody photographers are good at capturing photos outside at night. There is also an aspect of using “Off Camera Lighting” in moody photos. I use off camera lighting to make my couple stand out from the background. I can capture the epic colors of the sky and while simultaneously keeping my couples faces bright. Here’s a good way to understand this. Have you ever taken a picture at the beach or at a park on a really bright day? If you are using a cell phone or a consumer camera, the computer in the camera is trying to automatically figure out how bright to make the photo. If it exposes for the sky, the sky will be blue and you’ll even be able to see the cloud detail. But that means if there is a person in your photo, they are all blacked out like a silhouette. So in that scenario if you expose for the persons face so that they aren’t a silhouette, then the sky will be completely blown out white with zero detail. You either get one or the other. Not both. But I can get both. Color and detail in the sky, and brightness in everyone face. That’s the beauty of off camera flash.
Two lighting styles. I use both.
Natural light.
I employ the use of both natural light and artificial light on a wedding day. Natural light from the sun can be amazing. On wedding days, there is always something that is out my control. Always. But I still try to control as much as I can to get great photos. When using natural light here are some things that help me get great photos.
Clouds.
Cloudy days are really the greatest thing ever. The clouds take the direct harsh sun rays and soften them. Instead of making harsh shadows on your face, they disperse the light so it fills in your face beautifully.
Shade.
Sometimes using shade is the way to go to escape the midday sun. Trees, buildings, awnings, structures all can be creatively used to make better photos. Standing near a window is one of my favorite shots. The soft light streaming through a window accentuates the detail in clothing while making skin look creamy.
Harsh sunlight.
Sometimes you have to just go for it. Harsh light can be fun. If you’re creative you can use it through other objects like garden gates, trestles, arbors, pillars, etc. Sometimes just right in the middles of it.
Artificial Light - Flash
I use flash at every wedding. A lot of photographers choose not to learn how to use flash and try to make their style completely natural light. That would be fine if every wedding took place during the last hour of a cloudy day. But weddings are longer than one day. Sometimes it’s too cold to be outside. Sometimes it’s too hot. Sometimes it rains or snows. What happens when the sun goes down? Having the knowledge and skill to use flashes is vital to being a wedding photographer in New Jersey. Now, there are definitely ways to use flash so people look good. I don’t want anyone looking like they just got blasted in the eyes from the men in black. Here are some ways that I use flash on a wedding day.
Off Camera Flash
I put radio controlled flashes on light stands towards the back of the room. I point them towards the dance floor so that I can control the lighting. This method makes for a very dramatic look that my couples love.
Creative Gels
Lighting with gels is so much fun. I usually use this technique at night to create something that wasn’t there before. I use it to back light rain, snow, champagne, trees and more.
Studio lighting, outside.
I use umbrellas and soft boxes like you would see in a portrait studio. I have a portable setup that I bring outside with me to make big, beautiful, soft light.
